X-Factor USA allows voting by Twitter

Increasingly, TV shows are looking at ways to encourage feedback and engagement with their viewers. Usually, this takes the form of encouraging use of hashtags to focus conversation and to create a buzz around a program. From tomorrow, fans of the X-Factor show in the States will be able to vote for their favourite contestants via Twitter Direct Message (DM).

A dedicated website has been set up explaining how the process works and during each show will display tweets from judges, contestants and viewers. The usual ‘must be following you to DM’ rule has been relaxed and as long as viewers follow @TheXFactorUSA they can vote by sending a DM.

It’s easy to imagine the UK’s X-Factor and other shows that involve public voting introducing this voting mechanism soon.
